I am not sure it’s smart for the Republicans to have a real debate on serious proposals…

Hotair is saying that it would be smarter to attack Obama’s ideas instead of showing how empty he is:

Read Stephen Hayes’s op-edthis morning in the Journal about the GOP preparing to repeat her mistakes. The experience contrast will serve McCain better than Her Majesty, but hammering the guy for being a lightweight with a knack for prose won’t work since it makes it that much easier for Obama to prove his heft by showing command of the details. It’s a stupid line of attack anyway: If you want to motivate the base and capitalize on Maverick’s appeal to the middle, you don’t argue that Obama has no ideas, you argue that he has lots of ideas, all of them quite dogmatically liberal. McCain is the real centrist, much to the chagrin of most conservatives.

I’ll bet that approach would be terrible for McCain. I think if you strictly debate the merits of Obama’s and McCain’s ideas, my guess is that Obama will win. Obviously, I am sure even in that scenario the Republicans will throw every scare tactic at him, but my guess is that the American people will rally around Obama’s ideas.

Therefore, I think it’s way better for Republicans to throw mud at Obama just like is described in HotAir’s post (but not their position). Stick to race issues. Stick to bogus religious issues. Stick to the empty ‘Who’s the real patriot’ debate. I think you have better chances of winning that way. I think you have a better chance of rallying the base that way.

  • I think you’re way off the mark and I think Allah at HotAir is correct. Obama, while not coming across dogmatic or hyper-partisan, is pretty far left on issues. He has a 100% approval rating from many left-wing groups. He even voted against John Roberts. Hell, 22 Democrats in the Senate voted for Roberts. I think pointing these things out is McCain’s best hope to win.

  • Honestly Sav I think the amount of people voting for both Hillary and Obama is a sign that the hyper-partisan attack won’t be very strong. I think being dogmatic for universal* healthcare or tax cuts for the middle class will only score him points.

Anyways, I will happilly bet (provided it is not illegal) 50$ on the results of the 08 election. Assuming an Obama/McCain contest, if McCain wins, I will donate 50$ to the RNC, but if Obama wins, you will donate 50$ to the DNC.

I will be even more fair. If you lose, you only have to donate 25$ to the DNC.

  • heh

Well, McCain’s chances look pretty grim to me for numerous reasons so I don’t know if I’d want in on that bet.

  • 2 to 1 odds! I can’t go lower than that… Even I have to leave some room for swift boating and the like.

So do you not even like Obama’s health care plan? All he is going to do is give us the option of joining the same health care he gets to join, provided we pay the premiums. Are you even against that?
