There seems to be a little brouhaha regarding the comments Jane Fonda made on TV regarding the Vagina Monologues. Michelle joins in the chorus of people criticizing TV and Jane Fonda:

The woman has no class. You already knew that. But here’s more confirmation. Another reason not to let your children watch TV in the morning.

Here is what she actually said (From KC Blue Blog):

In that appearance Fonda is asked by Meredith Vieira

Vieira: “I know when it started there were some A-List starters that came out to help you (Ms. Ensler) but Jane you at first were not a big fan of the play so what turned you around?”

Jane Fonda responds by saying:

Fonda: “Well it wasn’t that I wasn’t a big fan, I hadn’t seen the play. I live in Georgia OK,” “I was asked to do a monologue called ‘Cunt,’ and I said, ‘I don’t think so, I’ve got enough problems.”

So here is my problem with Michelle’s conclusion. First, she was stating a fact that wasn’t gratuitous. She was asked why she wasn’t a big fan. I can understand Jane’s point. If you would ask me to act a monologue with that title, I am sure I would be shocked at first.

My second problem with Michelle is, what exactly can you show on TV in the morning? I much prefer my kids to hear that word than a news report on the latest school shooting. Or, a report on rapes cause by the fight in Congo. If what Jane Fonda said should not be shown, what about the rest?

And finally, my biggest problem is related to that last point. I didn’t see Michelle complaining about those clips. I can only conclude she is OK with those news, that they are not “another reason not to let your children watch TV in the morning”. This is nuts. You have to hear that 1 word from Jane Fonda to decide that? All the other news report on that day weren’t sufficient?

Anyways, I think the Today Show should not have apologized. We are grown ups here. Finally, if THAT’s the reason you don’t let your kids watch the Today Show, something is wrong with you…
