We should still worry about conservatives…
I think Michelle is very correct in thinking that now is not the time to roll over…
“Quo vadis,” conservatives? It’s the ancient, apocryphal question the apostle Peter asked Jesus while fleeing persecution in Rome. Where are you going? Where do we go from here?
The contest for the GOP presidential nomination is over. The conservative movement is not. Sen. John McCain’s campaign resurrection and Super Tuesday victory leave a diverse group on the Right—from the libertarian Club for Growth to First Amendment defenders to immigration enforcement proponents—dispirited. But the failure to nominate a true Republican unifier does not spell ideological defeat.
…
Get involved. Don’t calm down. Get fired up.
And that’s exactly why we need to still be vigilant. McCain seems to have won, and you would think conservatives would get the message that the type of divisive and extreme politics they are embracing won’t work in 2008. That would be too good to be true. Quite the contrary. Just like Bush who never stops going down a terrible road, conservatives will keep going at it… more tax cuts! Stop SCHIP! Waterboard! Build the fence! etc.
So while the primary voting numbers tell a great story for Democrats and progressives, it’s not the end of the story. Let’s leave hubris for the greek tragedies. Let’s ensure that 2008 not be like 2004.
